Retaining Walls

Shape your property, define its future. Professional Grounds can integrate retaining walls into your outdoor design for increased functionality and preservation.

Retaining walls are used to stabilize and hold sloping ground in place permanently. They prevent movement of the ground and curb soil erosion. Retaining walls are also a great way to increase your outdoor living area, which may be currently unused due to significant sloping. Walls can also act as seating, safety barriers, prep space, or sideboards. They can be a great structure to conceal unsightly AC units or pool equipment as well! Pro Grounds can introduce you to a variety of ways to build and utilize retaining walls on your property.

As important as a wall’s function are the specifications to which your walls are built. Professional Grounds adheres to a high standard when designing and constructing walls, which is so important because walls are produced with extremely heavy materials and often support significant amounts of weight. It is of the utmost importance that all walls are constructed safely and professionally for the integrity and longevity of the wall, as well as the safety of those around it. Professional Grounds works closely within all county specifications and construction regulations to ensure your walls are built to last.

A Professional Grounds Designer can help you to determine which wall and type material would be a perfect fit for your project. We are well versed in construction regulations and can assist, if your walls require, with additional permitting and licensed engineering resources.

Here are some examples of different retaining walls and boundaries built by Professional Grounds:

Stone Veneer Retaining Wall

STONE VENEER WALLS

A stone veneer wall is generally used in applications with steep slopes to retain ground. These walls are built on a concrete footing. Cinder block is attached as the footing and set to the appropriate height, and then natural stone is applied to conceal the block. These walls can also be constructed decoratively for non-retaining purposes. Seat walls, for instance, are great around your patio and can be utilized for extra prep space or as a sideboard for dinner parties. Stone veneer walls can be used to hide AC units or pool equipment, as raised planters, columns, and even as basins for water features.

Timber Walls

TIMBER WALLS

Timber walls are a great option for reinforcing larger hillside properties. Depending on their height, some walls require additional support and permits to be acquired through the county, both of which Professional Grounds will incorporate into their design and construction. As a standard, Professional Grounds uses pressure-treated Pine or Cedar to prevent rot, giving the wall a life of about 25 years.

Dry Stack Retaining Wall

DRY STACK FIELDSTONE WALLS

These walls are built by stacking stones on top of each other over a compacted sub-base. The wall is then back-filled with a layer of gravel directly behind the stone, and dirt is added to fill. These types of walls are great for areas that do not involve much height, as they use gravity to stay in place rather than mortar. Dry-Stack walls can be used for raised garden/vegetable beds, as stone accent around a larger tree to mask some of its roots, or to level out a gentle slope.

Segmental Retaining Wall

ENGINEERED SEGMENTAL WALLS

Segmental retaining walls are concrete blocks that are manufactured and pre-engineered. They come in countless sizes, shapes, and colors, and do not require a concrete footing. These walls can be built into seat walls, screening walls, columns and raised planters.
